John Wayne, who was an extremely good friend of and fan of Gary Cooper didn't like "High Noon." He couldn't understand how an entire town wouldn't support the sheriff and do the right thing. 4 men against an entire town seemed ridiculous to The Duke. From my perspective as a film student, "High Noon" was the beginning of the end of "The Western." It's my belief that the film showed an almost emasculated male lawman being led or at least influenced by is peace-making wife and a spineless town to support their own laws and peace. And then, only at the very end does his wife actually kill a man in cold blood who was planning to kill her own husband and another by scratching his face so her husband could get a clean shot. And after all this build up, after all the carnage has been done, does the town later run out from their secure holes to see their former sheriff figuratively spit on them by throwing his now worthless badge into the dusty blood-soaked ground below.
